Changing Your Furnace Air Filter

If you live in a home that relies on a furnace to heat it, you should check your filters regularly. This isn’t something to worry or be concerned over though, it’s a simple and quick task that doesn’t take a lot of time or effort.

Global recommendation is that you change or clean your furnace air filter every month. When the time comes to make a change, have a good read through your service manual to familiarize yourself with the necessary tools and sequence. Honeywell furnace filters in the 4 inch size are a very reliable choice.

The Steps to Changing Your Furnace Filter

  • Switch off the gas or power supply. This is a critical task that you must carry out to ensure your safety.
  • Locate and open the furnace door. For guidance on this, your service manual will give full instructions.
  • Upon opening the door you’ll see the furnace filter. Slide it out of the furnace and replace it with a fresh one. Any removal problems should be checked against the troubleshooting guide within the manual.
  • Once the filter is out you should be able to see if it needs replacing. The furnace air filter is designed to attract dirt, so a clogged up filter is in fact an indicator of its efficiency. A black and clogged filter is ready to be replaced with a new one.

  • Once you’ve assessed whether the filter needs replacing or not you should check within the blower and venting system. Any obstructions should be removed to prevent fire risk and improve efficiency.
  • Once you’ve ascertained whether to replace the filter or not it’s time to consult the service manual to ensure the one you replace it with is the exact same one. Furnace air filters generally don’t interchange between models so it is vitally important to make sure the correct one is reinstalled. Washable filters can be hosed down in the garden then reinserted.

Last Steps for Replacing your Furnace Filter

  • Replace the new or cleaned filter back into the furnace in the exact position you removed it from. Be sure your filter is installed the correct way around; the majority have instructions, arrows or guidance on them to denote their proper position. If not refer to the manual for further assistance.
  • Once the clean furnace filter is neatly back in position you should secure the blower door and lock it down tightly. Only then, once you’re satisfied the job has been completed and the door is closed tightly should the gas or power supply be reactivated.
